1. Purpose

The Membership Code of Ethics establishes the moral and professional principles that guide all members of the Commons. It ensures that contributions are not only compliant with rules but also aligned with the deeper values of integrity, inclusivity, and sustainability.

2. Ethical Principles

A. Integrity of Knowledge

• Members commit to sharing accurate, honest, and well‑documented knowledge.
• Plagiarism, misrepresentation, or data manipulation are strictly prohibited.
• Transparency in methodology, sources, and limitations is expected.

B. Inclusivity and Equity

• Members affirm the equal dignity of all participants, regardless of discipline, background, or identity.
• Contributions should be accessible to diverse audiences, using inclusive formats and language.
• Members actively work to remove barriers to participation.

C. Responsibility to Society

• Knowledge should be applied ethically to address real‑world challenges.
• Members avoid misuse of research or data that could harm communities or perpetuate injustice.
• Civic responsibility is central: contributions should strengthen public trust in knowledge.

D. Collaboration and Respect

• Members engage in dialogue with openness and humility.
• Interdisciplinary collaboration is valued over competition.
• Respect for differing perspectives is essential to collective progress.

E. Stewardship and Sustainability

• Members commit to long‑term stewardship of knowledge and community.
• Contributions should consider environmental, social, and cultural sustainability.
• Members support practices that ensure the Commons remains viable for future generations.

3. Ethical Responsibilities

A. In Research & Publishing

• Ensure proper attribution and licensing.
• Disclose conflicts of interest.
• Share findings responsibly, avoiding sensationalism or distortion.

B. In Policy and Practice

• Apply evidence with care, respecting context and community needs.
• Avoid selective use of data to justify predetermined outcomes.
• Promote transparency in decision‑making.

C. In Community Engagement

• Uphold civility and respect in all interactions.
• Mentor and support peers, especially early‑career members.
• Encourage constructive dialogue and shared problem‑solving.

4. Enforcement and Accountability

• Ethical breaches may result in review by the Governance Committee.
• Consequences may include warnings, suspension, or removal.
• Members have the right to appeal decisions under the Member Rights & Appeals Document.

5. Commitment

By joining the Commons, members affirm their commitment to this Code of Ethics. Membership is not only about access—it is about living the values of integrity, inclusivity, responsibility, collaboration, and sustainability in every contribution.
