Membership Code of Conduct
1. Purpose
The Membership Code of Conduct sets clear expectations for how members engage with one another and with the Commons. It ensures that the community remains respectful, inclusive, and impactful, while safeguarding the integrity of shared knowledge.
2. Core Principles
Members agree to uphold the following principles in all Commons activities:
- Respect: Treat all members with dignity, regardless of background, discipline, or perspective.
- Inclusivity: Actively welcome diverse voices and ensure accessibility in contributions.
- Integrity: Share accurate, honest, and properly attributed knowledge.
- Collaboration: Engage constructively, valuing dialogue over competition.
- Accountability: Accept responsibility for actions and contributions.
3. Expected Member Conduct
A. In Forums and Discussions
- Engage respectfully, avoiding personal attacks, harassment, or discriminatory language.
- Listen actively and value diverse perspectives.
- Keep discussions evidence‑based and constructive.
B. In Contributions (Publications, Datasets, Resources)
- Ensure accuracy, transparency, and proper attribution.
- Respect intellectual property and licensing requirements.
- Provide accessible formats (e.g., captions, metadata, inclusive design).
- Avoid plagiarism, misrepresentation, or data manipulation.
C. In Events and Working Groups
- Participate with civility and professionalism.
- Respect confidentiality when required.
- Share insights openly while acknowledging limitations.
- Support collaborative problem‑solving and innovation.
4. Prohibited Conduct
The following behaviors are strictly prohibited:
- Harassment, discrimination, or exclusionary behavior.
- Sharing false, misleading, or plagiarized information.
- Breaching confidentiality or privacy agreements.
- Misuse of Commons resources for personal gain.
- Disruptive or hostile behavior in forums, events, or collaborations.
5. Reporting and Enforcement
- Reporting: Members may report violations through the Commons’ confidential reporting system.
- Review: Reports are reviewed by the Governance Committee.
- Consequences: Violations may result in warnings, suspension, or removal from membership.
- Appeals: Members have the right to appeal enforcement decisions.
6. Member Responsibilities
- Familiarize yourself with all governance documents (Charter, Mission, Values, Policies).
- Actively contribute to a respectful and inclusive environment.
- Protect the Commons’ reputation by upholding ethical standards.
- Encourage and mentor new members where possible.
7. Commitment
By joining the Commons, members affirm their commitment to this Code of Conduct. Membership is not just access—it is a pledge to contribute responsibly to a global community where knowledge is open, dialogue is inclusive, and collaboration drives real‑world impact.
